Winter-time Home Safety Tips presentation

Friday, December 19, 2014, 2 pm at the Deltona Library

Be safe this winter. Join City of Deltona fire inspector, Lisa Nadeau, for a free presentation on how to keep your home safe this winter.

The presentation will include winter safety tips on topics such as holiday decorations and trees, candles, appliances, space heaters and more on EDITH (Emergency Drills in the Home) plans for your family - and more. Reservations are not required.

Tips for Winterizing a Florida Garden

Saturday, December 20, 2014, 1 pm at the Deltona Library

Master gardener Howard Jeffries will present “Preparing your landscape for winter in Florida.” Jeffries, a master gardener with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will discuss proper planning and care for now that can result in a healthier spring landscape. Reservations are not required.

Music Appreciation 101

Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 2 pm at the Daytona Beach Library on City Island

Come join the fun and bring the whole family to hear how composers bring music to life!

Eda Shlyam will lecture on music appreciation and perform a classic piano piece for the discerning ear. Dr. Eda Shlyam graduated from the Leningrad State Conservatory, taught in Russia, and then immigrated to the United States in 1979 to become a faculty member at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass. Refreshments will be served.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program

Join this exciting new program for children ages 0 to 5. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Enrollment starts early January 2015 at your local branch!

Stop in for a quick, introductory immersion in Mango, a free electronic language learning resource offered through the library’s eResources page on the website.. This self-guided learning database offers dozens of languages. No registration.

“Big Red Bus” visit

Wednesday, January 7, 2015
from 11 am - 4 pm at the Deltona Library

OneBlood’s Big Red Bus will be on-site to accept blood donations in the library's parking lot. OneBlood serves more than 200 hospitals and health care facilities in Central Florida. The bloodmobile is open to the public and incentives for donating may be available while supplies last. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are strongly encouraged.

Essential Oils Presentation

Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 1 pm at the Deltona Library

Wendy Crage of Doterra Wellness Advocates will explain the health benefits of essential oils during this free program. Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. No registration.

The Role and Importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Society

Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2 pm
at the Daytona Beach Library on City Island

Dr. Edison O. Jackson, President of Bethune-Cookman University will speak on the role and importance of historically black colleges and universities. Dr. Jackson became the 6th president of Bethune-Cookman University on March 20, 2013.

Dr. Jackson currently serves and holds memberships on a number of civic, educational and community boards and organizations. He has written extensively on issues of concern to educators with particular concentration on minority students and the community, academic preparation and student performance.

This program is part of the library’s Connecting with the Community Series, a two-year program funded in part by a Partnership Grant from the Florida Humanities Council.
